The Singapore police has put out a Facebook post debunking a video online which claimed that a group of officers bullied and harassed an elderly woman without a mask.

What was the video about?

The video, which was originally posted as an Instagram story, was subsequently circulated on other social media.

The clip shows a group of police officers conversing with two women, one of which is an elderly.

It accused the officers of "cluster[ing]" the elderly woman, who the original poster stated had taken off her mask for a while as she was feeling breathless.

The man who posted the video claimed that the police officers continued to tell the woman off until another person arrived to "salvage the situation".

The man wrote:

"Please @singaporepoliceforce there are people not wearing a mask and asking why people no badge, go and spend your time and make yourself more useful! Not taunt an old cardboard collection auntie! SHAME ON YOU!!"

The Singapore police was also tagged several times in the stories.

Clarifications

In response to the incident, the police said that the above allegations are false.

Officers responded to the incident on May 17 at around 6:43pm, at Blk 743 Yishun Ave 5.

The 85-year-old woman, who did not have a mask on, appeared lost. The woman is believed to have dementia.

Officers attended to her and helped her find her way home. Police also shared that the officers, worried that she might be hungry, bought her food.

A member of the public came forward and revealed that the woman stayed at a nearby block.

The woman's domestic helper was later contacted and she was returned home safely.

In their post, the police also commended two other members of public who offered their help — one offered a mask to the woman, which the police officer helped to put on, and another gave the woman a few more masks.

The police advises people not to participate in spreading unverified information, or make their own conjectures on an incident, and to be responsible when posting or sharing any information online.

The police said it takes a serious view of such malicious allegations, and are looking into the circulation of the falsehood.
