Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed "excellent" bilateral ties and spoke about new areas for cooperation during a telephone call on May 11 (Tuesday).
Welcomed bilateral partnerships with Canada
Noting the growing economic ties between Singapore and Canada, the two leaders welcomed the expansion of bilateral cooperation to new areas including climate change, infrastructure and smart cities, and cybersecurity.
Since the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) came into force in 2018, bilateral trade and investment links have strengthened with Canada, said PM Lee's press secretary.
Both leaders also welcomed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on infrastructure and smart cities in October 2020, and the upcoming renewal of the MOU on cybersecurity cooperation.
Discussed new areas of cooperation
PM Lee and Trudeau also discussed new areas of cooperation, including clean technology, FinTech, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and welcomed ongoing discussions on promoting youth exchange.
"PM Lee also welcomed Canada’s efforts in deepening its economic engagement of Asean and the region," his press secretary said.
