The Ministry of Education (MOE) will tighten current safe management measures (SMMs) in schools and institutes of higher learning (IHL), including the compulsory wearing of masks, from Sunday, May 16 to Sunday, June 13.

The MOE press release (May 14) stated that while schools and IHLs will continue, there will be additional measures put in place.

Additional measures implemented

The additional measures across MOE kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, Special Education (SPED) schools, junior colleges, Millennia Institute and IHLs are as follows:

i. All students and staff must wear masks, and not face shields, when in school and on campus, unless they are unable to do so due to special needs or medical conditions.

ii. To reduce intermingling of students, classes will be divided into cohorts, with lectures capped at a maximum of 50 persons. Group size across all activities will be reduced from five to two persons, with SMMs in place.

iii. Centre-based classes, such as MOE Language centres, will be conducted online.

iv. All Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) will be conducted online (eCCA), while those conducted externally will remain suspended during this period. All other external events will remain suspended.

v. In-person events will be suspended. All large-scale events will continue to be cancelled or postponed, or held virtually, if possible.

vi. Schools will enforce fixed seating with one metre spacing for recess, with no intermingling.

IHLs to keep in-person class and lecture sizes to no more than 50 persons

All IHLs will continue to keep in-person class and lecture size to no more than 50 persons, with larger classes and lectures to be conducted online.

Dining in canteens and dining halls at the IHLs can continue with the necessary SMMs.

Examinations will be reformatted and conducted in classrooms with maximum class size of 50 persons. Where practicable IHLs will conduct online examinations.
