S'pore man, 40, seen punching & kicking fellow commuter in MRT, arrested for public nuisance

The men had a dispute while they were on the train.

A video of an assault taking place on an MRT train going towards Rochor MRT Station has gone viral today (May 23).

The 14-second clip showed a man dressed in black, punching and kicking another man who was already curled on the floor.

During the attack, a woman was seen moving away from the cabin.

Meanwhile, there were at least two other bystanders in the same cabin.

The man on the ground groaned loudly as the blows landed on him.

Persons involved no longer at scene

According to a news release by the police, the police were alerted to a case of an assault on an MRT train at 10:13am on May 23.

The incident had happened in the vicinity of 60 Bukit Timah Road.

Upon receiving a "999" call, police officers from the Public Transport Security Command were dispatched to render assistance.

However, the persons involved were no longer at the scene.

Police officers from Central Division worked with officers from the Public Transport Security Command to identify and locate the persons involved.

Arrested for public nuisance

A 40-year-old was subsequently identified and arrested on the same day for the offence of public nuisance.

The man will also be investigated for voluntarily causing hurt.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 40-year-old man and a 24-year-old man had a dispute while they were on the train.

The dispute escalated and the older man had allegedly assaulted the younger man as a result.

Investigations are ongoing.

The police advise members of the public to call "999" if they see an assault taking place.

Videos of the incident should also be shared with the police, instead of being circulated on social media.
