A dog in the Philippines, hailed as a hero after saving its owner's daughter and her cousin from being run over in 2011, has died.

According to Inquirer, veterinarian Anton Lim, who had been looking after Kabang after the death of her owner, announced that the brave canine had passed away peacefully in her bed on May 17.

Kabang was 13 years old, the equivalent of 91 years for humans.

She rose to prominence after she leapt over the two girls into the path of the on-coming motorcycle, losing her snout in the process.

Saved in a 5-hour procedure

Kabang's heroic effort drew international attention and moved Lim to fly the dog over to the United States for a snout reconstruction.

She was treated at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, reported CBS13, with a surgical procedure that took five-hours.

Surgeons closed up Kabang's facial wound and treated other medical conditions such as a heartworm and a type of infectious cancer.

After seven months at the hospital, the street dog returned home to the Philippines and to her grateful owner Rudy Bunggal.

When Bunggal died in 2015, Kabang came under the care of Lim.

To be honoured with a statue

Lim told the Inquirer that Kabang had displayed no sign of prior sickness before her death.

Kabang had in fact been a voracious eater up to the last moment of her life.

Lim's family has decided to erect a statue along a public boulevard in Zamboanga City to commemorate her.

Kabang's remains, which are temporarily buried in Lim's backyard, will eventually be laid to rest at the statue upon its completion.
