The Cat Welfare Society (CWS) underlines the need for education and awareness about pet sterilisation and accessibility of sterilisation to those who wish to be responsible owners.
This was in response to the recent case whereby 50 cats were found in need of urgent rehoming from a Bedok HDB flat.
According to a local animal rescue Haus of Furries (HOF), the Housing Development Board (HDB) has given the owners a deadline to remove the cats by June 30, 2021.
The appeal for adopters has since been shared in several local cat-loving community groups on Facebook.
CWS: The number of cats involved shows the need for education
In response to Mothership's queries, CWS said the sheer number of cats involved in this case shows an urgent need for education and awareness about sterilisation as well as accessibility of sterilisation to those who keep cats responsibly.
CWS runs the Pet Cat Sterilisation Scheme for financially disadvantaged families (PCSP) which educates the families and helps sterilise their cats for free. All costs are borne by the society.
They are helping to sterilise approximately 250 cats under PCSP each month with a three to four-week wait time usually for these families in need.
In addition, CWS calls for authorities to step in and mete out penalties against irresponsible cat owners who refuse to neuter their pets in order to deter more of such cases.
AVS is aware of the case
In response to Mothership, Group Director of Community Animal Management at the National Parks Board (NParks), Jessica Kwok, said that the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) is aware of the case.
AVS officers had visited the house owner and the cats were found to be generally healthy, the statement wrote.
AVS understands that the owners are working with independent rescuers to re-home the cats and they had advised the owners to:
- separate the unsterilised male and female cats to prevent further breeding and;
- move the cats into bigger cages and allow them to roam freely in the unit wherever possible.
They also reminded the owners to provide a clean environment for the cats and cautioned them against abandoning the cats.
If you wish to adopt the cats, more details can be found here.
