In a doorstop interview with media after Singapore Airlines (SIA) delivered the first shipment of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines to Singapore on Monday (Dec. 21), Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung addressed queries regarding the Covid-19 situation in London.

In response to a media question asking if a travel ban for U.K. was being considered, Ong said that the situation in the U.K. is something the government is looking at.

Ong also said that if there are any decisions to be made, the Ministry of Health will announce it.

What's going on in London?

London has been gripped by a new, more infectious, strain of Covid-19.

According to UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock, the new strain of Covid-19 has gone "out of control".

The new Covid-19 variant was said to be up to 70 per cent more transmissible, according to a presentation by Eriok Volz, from Imperial College London.

This has led to numerous countries imposing some form of travel control on London, and south-east England.

According to BBC, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium are all halting flights to the UK.

Hong Kong will also ban flights from U.K. from Dec. 22 onwards.

India has also halted flights to and from the U.K.

Experts however expect vaccines to protect against the new strain of Covid-19.
