A 37-year-old man will be charged in court on Friday (Oct. 9) for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from carrying out his duty.
Drove against flow of traffic
On Oct. 7, 2020, around 3:15am, officers from the Bedok Police Division of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) spotted a man driving recklessly in a carpark along Chai Chee Road.
The man sped off after the officers signalled to him to stop, which led to a car chase where the male driver beat a red traffic light and drove against the flow of traffic.
The man then drove into a carpark along Bedok North Street where he drove into the left side of the police car causing one of the police officers inside the vehicle to be injured.
The man then drove over the road divider and escaped.
The 21-year-old full-time police national serviceman was conveyed to Changi General Hospital in a conscious condition, and later received outpatient treatment.
Man was found with suspected controlled drugs on him during his arrest
The car the perpetrator was driving was later found abandoned along Bedok North Avenue 3.
When the car was checked, a stun device was found in it.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on the same day.
During the man's arrest, substances that were suspected to be controlled drugs were found on him.
In addition to being charged in court on Oct. 9 for with voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty, the man has a previous charge for an offence of rash act causing hurt.
SPF stated that he was on court bail when the incident took place.
Zero tolerance for acts which endanger police officers
The perpetrator will also be investigated for the offences of possession of arms without licence, dangerous driving, and suspected drug-related offences.
If found guilty for the offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, he could be subject to a jail term of up to seven years, and a fine or caning.
In their press release, SPF stated:
The Police have zero tolerance towards such brazen acts which threatens the safety of our officers and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
