A 49-year-old domestic helper, Marilou Garcia Calapini, suffered an accident at Pulau Ubin, where she spent her off day on Sep. 27.
The Filipina domestic helper has been working in Singapore for over 20 years.
Was conscious after falling off the bike but felt unwell
Calapini visited Pulau Ubin to cycle with her friend that day, the Chinese evening newspaper Lianhe Wanbao learnt from Calapini's sister, Christina.
Halfway through, it started raining heavily and the duo decided to head back to the jetty and leave the island.
The friend was riding ahead of Calapini and later realised that Calapini was not following behind her.
She waited five minutes, but did not see Calapini catching up so she went to look for the latter. She then saw a couple helping Calapini up from the ground.
Calapini was conscious at that point in time. While she was able to raise her hand, she felt nauseous and had a headache, Wanbao reported.
Sensing something was not right, the couple called for help, and the police coast guards sent Calapini to the hospital for treatment subsequently.
Sent to ICU
Wanbao reported Calapini fell into a coma at the hospital and was diagnosed with cerebral haemorrhage.
She underwent brain surgery that evening and another one the next day to reduce pressure on her brain.
She was sent to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Family members in the Philippines
Calapini is married with two children, a son aged 19 and a daughter aged 12, according to the report.
She also has a 73-year-old father.
All her family members are in the Philippines.
Despite the serious situation, Calapini's family cannot come to Singapore to visit her, but can only get updates via video calls.
