A 19-year-old man has been arrested for cheating and other offences.
According to a police news release, a deliveryman collecting an item was asked to make upfront payment to the seller first, and assured that he would be reimbursed once he delivered the item.
However, after collecting the item and making payment, he was directed to a non-existent delivery location, and the buyer became uncontactable.
He reported the incident to the police on Sep. 5.
On Oct. 6, the police arrested the buyer, a 19-year-old man, and found that he had posed as both buyer and seller, according to a statement on Oct. 8.
He will be charged in court with cheating today (Oct. 8), and faces imprisonment for up to 10 years, and a fine, if he is found guilty.
The amount of money paid by the deliveryman and details of the item were not mentioned in the police statement.
Other offences committed
Police said that suspected drug paraphernalia was seized when the man was arrested.
The man is also being investigated for three other offences.
Police found that the man had driven a vehicle without a valid driving license. For this offence, he faces a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
He had also driven without car insurance, and he faces a fine of up to S$1,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.
The man was also found carrying a kerambit knife in public. As it is considered an offensive weapon, he faces a maximum penalty of imprisonment for three years and up to six strokes of the cane.
