Singapore is getting ready to celebrate her 55th birthday.
On Aug. 4, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will deliver his National Day message, which will be broadcast in English and other languages, on various platforms.
The first broadcast timing is at 10am, Aug. 9.
It will also be available in other languages, and then online:
The upcoming national address by PM Lee will be his 11th address this year.
0. New Year's message
Technically delivered on the last day of 2019, PM Lee spoke of an outlook fraught with uncertainty.
This would prove to be true many times over.
(Bonus) Chinese New Year message
PM Lee was in Davos at the time, so he technically didn't appear on camera to address the nation. It was a joyous occasion, but his speech already included a mention of the "new coronavirus".
1. Message on the novel coronavirus situation
This took place on Feb. 8, after the DORSCON level had been raised to Orange. PM Lee urged the public to remain calm.
2. Covid-19 outbreak March
This was broadcast on March 12. PM Lee assured Singaporeans the country would not move to DORSCON Red, or go into lockdown then.
But he also said more stringent measures would be needed in the future, which turned out to be accurate.
Also, the coronavirus got a new name, Covid-19.
3. Circuit Breaker announcement
This was the big one on April 3, with PM Lee announcing the Circuit Breaker.
Singaporeans everywhere prepared to get to know their families a whole lot better.
4. Update on situation in foreign worker dormitories
Just a few days later on April 10, PM Lee gave an update on the outbreak situation in the migrant worker dormitories, among other things.
He pledged to ensure medical care and treatment, and ensure that their salaries will continue to be paid.
5. Circuit breaker extension
After a few weeks of Circuit Breaker measures, on April 21, PM Lee dashed the hopes of everyone anticipating freedom on Star Wars Day (May 4).
Instead, the measures would be extended.
6. May Day message
During PM Lee's May Day message on April 30, he said things have changed for good and there was no going back, even after the end of Circuit Breaker.
7. Hari Raya greetings
PM Lee joined other politicians for the Hari Raya greetings broadcast on TV.
8. National Broadcast (before GE)
Before the general election, PM Lee and other members of his Cabinet delivered a series of national broadcasts dealing with Covid-19 and the future.
9. Parliament has dissolved
Another memorable moment of 2020, with PM Lee officially calling GE2020.
10. Swearing-in ceremony for Cabinet
During the swearing-in ceremony for his new Cabinet members and political office holders, PM Lee delivered another speech which touched upon the developments of the general election.
And the National Day message makes number 11. It will probably mention Covid-19.
