A 60-year-old Singaporean man molested and punched a female jogger after watching pornography in his company vehicle back in May of this year.

The man, Kannan Sukumaran, was convicted of one charge of aggravated outrage of modesty in court on Tuesday (Aug. 11).

Grabbed victim's chest from behind

According to court documents, the incident occurred on May 12, 2020.

Kannan was employed as a delivery driver at the time. Before 7:30pm, he had parked his assigned company van beside the main road along Yishun Ave 1.

He was watching a pornographic video while parked when he spotted the victim, a 36-year-old woman who was jogging alone on the pavement beside the main road.

He was further aroused by the sight of the victim, and decided to approach her.

At around 7:30pm, Kannan exited the van and approached the victim from behind, then used his right arm to grab her across her chest and squeezed her breast.

He then tried to push her in the direction of the bushes on the left side of the pavement. The victim attempted to resist Kannan, and in the course of the struggle, he punched her on the left side of her chest once.

She then fell to the ground and suffered a cut to her left elbow, which started bleeding. After the woman had fallen to the ground, Kannan told her: "I want to f*ck you."

This caused the woman significant alarm because she was afraid of being raped. In her fear, the woman tried to kick him away and shouted for help.

Another jogger heard victim's cries for help

Another woman who was jogging in the vicinity heard the victim's cries for help and approached her. Upon seeing that passers-by were responding to the victim, Kannan fled back to the van and drove off.

The other jogger managed to note down the van's registration number and called the police. Paramedics subsequently attended to the victim at the scene.

The victim’s wound to her left elbow was treated but she refused to be conveyed to a hospital. The victim also felt pain to the left side of her chest as a result of the punch.

Follow-up investigations resulted in Kannan's arrest at his home later that night at 11:33pm.

Sentenced to 4.5 years of jail plus three months in lieu of caning

Kannan pleaded guilty and was convicted of one charge of aggravated outrage of modesty.

He was sentenced to four-and-a-half years' imprisonment, with an additional three months in lieu of caning, as men over the age of 50 cannot be caned.

For aggravated outrage of modesty, he could have been imprisoned for between two and 10 years. For men under the age of 50, the sentence also comes with mandatory caning.
