Names are a pretty intrinsic part of our identity, and unless you make the effort to go through some administrative and legal processes to change it, you're stuck with it for life.

And if you've ever wondered what's in a name, one woman in Indonesia certainly has a story to tell.

Single-letter name

The girl's official name, according to her driving license, is Y.

Yes, a single letter.

23-year-old Y, who resides in Yogyakarta, was originally going to be named "Dasih Utami", according to Indonesian news site Kumparan.

However, when her father, Slamet Sugiyono, was registering her name, he decided he wanted something more short and sweet.

Additionally, he said that in the past before Indonesia's reformation of its civil registration system, birth certificates were "more expensive" if names are longer.

As he was not well-off in the past, he decided to give his daughter a much shorter name.

Her name's true meaning

But as Slamet elaborates, there's more to Y's name than just convenience.

Slamet had actually named his daughter after the last letter in the Jawi alphabet, "Ya".

Jawi is an Arabic writing system Muslims use.

As "Ya" is the last letter, it completes the alphabet. Slamet thus decided to name his daughter Y as she, in a way, completes him.

Y, who is currently in university, said that although she had never been bullied or harassed for her name, she did encounter administrative difficulties due to her name during exams.

She added that she had only realised her name was a single letter in high school, as the people around her always called her "Ai" when she was young.

After knowing her real name, however, she started introducing herself as "Y".
