Highly explosive materials kept in warehouse since 2014: Officials
According to officials, the cause of the blast could be due to highly explosive material that have been stored in a warehouse since 2014, reported BBC.
The president of Beirut, Michel Aoun, tweeted in Arabic that it was "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored in an unsafe manner.
With investigations underway to find the cause of the explosion, the country's Prime Minister and Supreme Defence Council said they would hold those accountable for the blast, reported BBC.
The president said the government would release emergency funds, while the country has declared a three-day mourning period.
A journalist from BBC reported "dead bodies at the scene and severe damage".

BBC also reported that hospitals are currently overwhelmed, with many buildings destroyed by the blast.
