Disgruntled vending machine customer demands S$1 refund from Yeo's, claims can designs too similar

If you've ever hit the wrong button at a vending machine by mistake, you probably know the feeling: stuck with a product you did not want, with no avenue for an exchange or refund.

One such incident appears to have happened in Bedok recently.

According to a Facebook post by "新加坡眼 Singapore Eye", one disgruntled customer going by the name of "Eddy Eddy" lost S$1 after selecting the wrong drink.

"Eddy" had wanted to buy a soy bean drink, but mistakenly selected chrysanthemum tea instead.

The reason? The packaging for different products were too similar.

A picture, presumably from "Eddy", provided evidence of the similarity.

This state of affairs drove the customer to write to the email provided on Yeo's website.

The customer's demands were: a refund of S$1 to compensate him for his loss, as well as a change of packaging so that future customers would not find themselves in the same predicament.

The original post appears to have been made by Facebook user "Ed Dy", though the contents are not accessible to the public:

A later post by "Ed Dy" says that he is "getting both fan mail and hate mail", and that he "didn't know people felt so strongly about Yeo's graphic design".

Separately "Ed Dy" also mentions a "boomersona", which possibly refers to a "boomer persona" which is assumed for select online posts.

Criticised for not owning mistake

While it's not known whether "Eddy" has received a refund, they have certainly received a great deal of feedback from commenters on the post.

Many disagreed with the contention that "Eddy" was confused by the packaging:

'Chrysanthemum tea' and 'soy bean drink' are printed on the can, if you pressed wrongly, leave it! You still had to send this nonsensical email to let everyone know you are an idiot!

Others urged "Eddy" to accept his part of the blame. As one commenter asked rhetorically, "if you can't defecate, do you blame the toilet bowl?"

Others suggested that the incident was an expression of wider social phenomenon:

This is the majority of people in Singapore, making complaints over small things, when the problem is their own responsibility, they still want to pin the blame on others.

Not all comments unsympathetic

"Eddy" found some kindred spirits as well, however.

I have also bought wrongly too, just drink

Those who managed to put themselves in "Eddy"'s shoes would have found more reason for sympathy in the complaint email: the difficulty of getting the correct spelling for crysmantamium crystantamum crysentamum crysentemeum chrysanthemum.
