An elderly taxi driver was allegedly assaulted at Prinsep Street in broad daylight by a female passenger who had also dodged paying the fare.

In response to the incident, which was caught on the dashcam of the taxi, the son of the taxi driver has taken to Facebook on July 16 to seek the public's help to come forward as eyewitnesses.

What happened

According to the taxi driver's son Kelvin Chua, his father picked up the woman, who appeared to be in her late 20s, along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 beside Block 417 at 11:25am.

She was apparently not wearing a mask.

Within a minute of getting onto the cab, she allegedly asked to borrow the driver's mobile phone to make a call.

The taxi driver acceded to the woman's request, as Chua said his father "kindly asked if she's making a local call" and proceeded to lend her his phone.

According to Chua, the woman made multiple calls throughout the 17-minute journey, which showed up in the phone's call log, and refused to return the phone, despite repeated requests by the driver.

She then got into a heated argument over the phone, and refused to return the phone when the driver asked for it again.

Allegedly dodged fare

The taxi arrived at the destination at 11:42am at Prinsep Street and the woman returned the phone.

The driver then requested for payment, according to Chua, but the passenger told him to "wait here".

She allegedly alighted without paying and went on her way, Chua wrote.

Assault caught on camera

Chua's father then followed the woman from a distance and about 20 seconds later, she swung her arm at the taxi driver -- an action Chua said was caught on the dashcam video as well.

The taxi driver continued to follow the woman and she allegedly attacked him this time using a pizza board from one of the restaurants.

Chua said his father blocked the attack with his arm, but the force broke his watch.

Within a matter of minutes, she walked back to the taxi, still without her mask on, and allegedly grabbed the NETs machine and flung it at the driver.

The device was still attached by its cord inside the taxi, and ended up damaged, but did not manage to hit the driver.

When the police arrived at 12pm, Chua said the woman had left the scene.

Chua said a police report has been filed and is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
