The Elections Department (ELD) has urged a Facebook user to come forward after the latter alleged that a polling agent "coerced" an 80-year-old voter into voting for the People's Action Party (PAP).

This polling agent, alleged the Facebook user, indicated to the elderly voter where she should stamp on her ballot paper.

The Facebook user did not indicate which polling station this took place in. Neither did the user provide any other details except that the elderly voter is their mother.

In response, the ELD said that it is aware of the Facebook post.

"These are serious allegations," said the ELD, adding that polling agents are confined to specific areas in polling stations and are not allowed to assist voters.

Election officials, on the other hand, may explain the method of voting to voters who need assistance:

"For voters who need assistance, our election officials may explain the method of voting to a voter who requests for an explanation. Our election officers are trained to do this audibly, to ensure that polling agents can hear the conversation."

ELD added that it is committed to ensuring voting security and secrecy, and has put in place rigorous controls at every step of the voting process to ensure this.

It also requested for the Facebook user to contact ELD via email ([email protected]) or phone (1800-225-5353) so that it can look into the matter.
