Thailand reported one new imported case of Covid-19 from Singapore, the Bangkok Post reported.

Imported case is a Thai electrician who worked in Singapore

The patient in question was a 52-year-old Thai man who worked as an electrician in Singapore, a spokesperson for Thailand's Centre for Covid Situation Administration stated.

He had returned to Thailand on July 6, whereupon he was placed into quarantine.

The man then tested positive for the virus on July 17, and was reported as an imported case on July 20, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 3,250 at that time.

As of July 21, the total number of cases has risen to 3,255. Five more imported cases were reported from Egypt, Sudan and Japan.

The country also marked its 57th day of zero locally transmitted cases, the Bangkok Post further reported.

Thailand is extending its state of emergency

On Wednesday, July 22, Thailand announced that it was extending its state of emergency until the end of August, maintaining the security measure put in place to contain its coronavirus outbreak.

Somsak Roongsita, secretary-general of the National Security Council, stated,"It is still necessary to have the decree because we are opening up the country for more business meetings and tourism to stimulate the economy."

He also added that doctors had requested that the state of emergency be maintained.

Many people in Thailand are since questioning the need for an emergency decree.

In addition, the extension came after political protests took place against the government over the weekend, in defiance of a ban on gatherings.

However, Somsak has stated that the emergency decree would be used only to contain virus outbreaks and not rallies.
