They contain both pandemic essentials and food.

Care packages sent by the South Korean government to people serving their mandatory quarantine have won widespread praise online for the items provided.

Care packages contain pandemic essentials & food

On the second day of his quarantine back in April 2020, Imgur user Uvzxkwq posted pictures of the care package he received, which contained essentials such as disinfectant, as well as some fresh produce.

The hygiene essentials he received included face masks and a biohazard waste disposal bag.

The fresh produce found in his care package included some oranges, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers.

The produce are presumably given to discourage those under quarantine to step out of their homes by providing them with essentials.

The care package also included a note from the South Korean government.

According to the Uvzxkwq's translation, the note said:

"Hello, for those currently suffering from the Covid-19 virus, we send our regards and sympathy. We are sending you this 'eco-friendly health package' that is made from eco-friendly crops.

We hope this energises you. We also hope that you will get well soon and return to your daily life. You can do it! Fight it! Go South Korea!"

Internet users praise South Korean government's Covid-19 response

Several Imgur users were impressed with the care package, with one saying this made them respect the South Koreans even more.

Quite a number of them also took jabs at the American government for what they saw as a lacklustre response as compared to that from the South Korean government.

Option of care package or cash

Travellers entering South Korea could also choose between receiving the care package or cash, according to a first-hand account by YouTuber Abe Kim.

Kim, who was serving a mandatory 14-day quarantine after arriving in South Korea from the U.S. in May, said he was given the option of either receiving a second care package with instant food and daily essentials, or forgoing that and getting money instead.

According to the Embassy of South Korea in Singapore, all inbound travellers (including returning Korean nationals) are required to quarantine themselves for 14 days upon their arrival in South Korea starting from April 1, 2020.

For those who reside in South Korea, they will self-quarantine at their place of residence for 14 days.

For foreign nationals who are short-term visitors in Korea, and Korean nationals and/or foreign residents whose place of residence is deemed not suitable for quarantine, they will serve their quarantine at a designated government facility at their own cost, which is KRW2,100,000 (S$2,426) per person.

South Korea has seen relative success in containing the virus outbreak without imposing a nationwide lockdown.

But the country saw new clusters emerging in the Seoul Metropolitan area after they eased social distancing measures in early May, following several days of no local transmission, The Wall Street Journal reported.
