British woman angry tweets about S'pore being in China & engaging in child labour

Excuse me?

A woman who supports British politician Jeremy Corbyn, has angry tweeted about the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom and somehow implicating Singapore in the process, while directing the other parts of her anger towards China.

But one thing about her tweet is clear: She believes Singapore is in China.

There is a lot to reverse engineer and unpack from this July 15 tweet, but it basically goes like this:

• Dyson, the British company that makes fancy blade-less hairdryers and fans, chose Singapore as its base for its operations, effectively moving out of the United Kingdom -- a well-documented process that brought a lot of cheer here.

• The founder of Dyson, James Dyson, was then criticised for being a hypocrite as he is a Brexit backer -- which means he wants to preserve British interests but inadvertently took jobs from his company and moved them overseas.

• Tories refer to the Conservative Party, which is in power and led by Boris Johnson after Corbyn was vanquished in the election in 2019 as the Labour Party was routed.

• Johnson is a self-proclaimed Sinophile, which means he is for closer ties with China.

• However, there is now a split within the Conservative Party -- with elements who are against China and others who are rooting for closer economic ties with the Chinese.

• The latest kerfuffle between Britain and China stems from London coming down strongly on Beijing’s new security law, which threatens to undermine the autonomy of Hong Kong.

• Johnson pledged to admit 3 million Hongkongers, saying the law broke the “one country, two systems” arrangement agreed on when the UK handed the territory over to China in 1997.

• The #Huawei hashtag refers to London earlier cutting off Chinese tech giant Huawei’s involvement in the 5G network rollout in Britain.

• The Tory government has also proposed the creation of a group of democratic nations that could develop its own 5G technology and equipment, so as not to have to rely on Huawei, which is accused by the United States of spying on behalf of the Beijing government.

• The woman who tweeted revealed her political position in her Twitter bio:

Just a deep thinking opinionated woman

who believes in equality for all.

Phew.

Responses

The woman's tweet received multiple replies mostly trying to school her about Singapore and why she is wrong:

So, the only takeaway is: No, Singapore is not in China.

If Crazy Rich Asians didn't make that clear, then perhaps nothing would.
