Pritam Singh, Workers' Party chief and new Leader of the Opposition, has new privileges and responsibilities, as outlined in a joint statement from the office of the Speaker of Parliament (Tan Chuan-Jin) and the office of the Leader of the House (Grace Fu).

This includes a salary of S$385,000 a year, briefings on select matters of national security, and attendance at certain official events.

Met with Speaker of Parliament and Leader of the House

In a Facebook post on July 28, Pritam revealed that he had met with Fu and had lunch with Tan to discuss this new development.

The official designation of Leader of the Opposition is the first such time it has been used in Singapore's history.

Pritam also said that he will confer with the two Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) and extend his support to them, as appropriate, in light of the staff and resources assigned to support the opposition in Parliament.

The two NCMPs will be Leong Mun Wai and Hazel Poa of the Progress Singapore Party.

Pritam added that he will speak in greater detail about the Workers' Party's approach in Parliament over the next term during the next debate, scheduled for August 2020.
