A pregnant woman on her way to the hospital to deliver her baby had no choice but to give birth in her car on July 21 night as she was stuck in a massive traffic jam on the Central Expressway (CTE), Lianhe Wanbao reported.

The two-hour jam was the result of a collision involving a car and a container lorry along the CTE towards the Ayer Rajah Expressway at about 10:10pm.

Only one lane of the expressway could be used due to the position of the vehicles that collided.

The vehicles had crashed into the central divider on one lane, and the container belonging to the lorry overturned onto another lane.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the accident.

Man sought police, SCDF help after birth

The Chinese paper reported a witness saying: "The baby couldn't wait. The woman just had to give birth in the car."

"Her husband ran to look for the police for help, shouting that his wife had just given birth."

A man was seen running out of a red car.

Police and SCDF personnel followed the person asking for help, who reportedly appeared to be Malay, back to his car.

The woman and her newborn were taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital in an SCDF ambulance.

A 34-year-old lorry driver and a 38-year-old male passenger involved in the accident were conveyed conscious to the Singapore General Hospital.

They had sustained injuries.

Police investigations are still underway.
