No further police action will be taken against Ong Ye Kung after a report was lodged against him over a video put up during the recent General Election period featuring the People’s Action Party's candidate speaking with a schoolboy.
The Elections Department (ELD) and the police issued a joint statement to the media confirming that a police report had been made and saying that the ELD’s Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) had issued an advisory to Ong to “remind him to comply with the law in relation to all campaigning activities”.
“As the ARO had looked into the matter, the Police will not be taking any further action,” the joint response also said.
What was the issue?
No person attending a primary or secondary school as a student is allowed to take part in any election activity, under section 83(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
The video, “The ‘MOE guy’ vs The Sembawang TripAdvisor”, featured Ong and a primary school-looking boy chatting about the amenities the PAP had introduced to the constituency.
It was uploaded to Facebook on July 2.
At that time, it was eight days before Polling Day.
The video was promptly taken down by Ong.
This was after the authorities told him that it was “not in line with electoral rules”.
Ong then put up a Facebook post after the video was taken down, and said "we have been informed by authorities that this is not in line with electoral rules".
“We have therefore taken down the video. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
He also said the boy, Jony, lives in Sembawang.
Ong, who is now a Member of Parliament-elect, is the Education Minister.
He led the PAP’s team in the Sembawang GRC and received 67.29 per cent of the vote against the National Solidarity Party.
