On June 30, several politicians filed their nomination papers on Nomination Day, confirming their candidacy for the general election.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Masagos Zulkifli, is contesting for Tampines GRC and will be anchoring the team following Heng Swee Keat's move to East Coast GRC.

Tribute to retiring Malay/Muslim MPs

After the hustle and bustle of Nomination Day, Masagos penned a tribute to four retiring members of parliament (MPs) in the Malay/Muslim community.

In his tribute, he recognised that the contributions of the former MPs have been invaluable.

"I am certain that these admirable individuals will continue to contribute in other ways. I wish them the very best for their future endeavours."

Here are the four retiring MPs:

Yaacob Ibrahim

Yaacob Ibrahim, 65, was the MP for Jalan Besar GRC, which he has served since 1997.

According to Masagos, he has also held many ministerial portfolios.

In his 23 years as a politician, he has served as the Minister for Communication and Information, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs.

Here's how Masagos described him: "And despite his significant contributions and success, he remains humble and is often quoted as being 'gentlemanly' even to his critics."

Intan Mokhtar

Intan Mokhtar, 43, was the MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC and has served as an MP since 2011.

According to her Facebook post, she decided to retire from politics after serving for two terms to focus more on her health, family as well as personal and professional growth in the next half of her life.

Masagos said that her "gentle but firm" demeanour will be missed by many in the House.

"She has been a strong believer in education as well as asatizah development and speaks out for the underprivileged and marginalised. Intan had remained committed and passionate in championing these issues. May she continue to be in good health always."

Fatimah Lateef

54-year-old Fatimah Lateef was the MP for Marine Parade GRC.

Masagos called her a "seasoned MP", having served the Geylang Serai ward for over 14 years.

As someone who is "no stranger to the community" and "always willing to contribute", he remembers her for being committed to supporting her constituents, as well as championing women's issues.

Zainal Sapari

54-year-old Zainal Sapari was the MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

He has served the Pasir Ris East ward for two terms since 2011.

According to Masagos, he has worked closely with various Malay/Muslim organisations to ensure that the community continues to upskill to achieve better career mobility and prospects.

"He recognised that education is key to social mobility and as the adviser for M3@Pasir Ris-Punggol, Mr Zainal is among the first few to introduce Kelas Matematika (KMM@CC) in his GRC."

16 other retired MPs

These four former MPs aren't the only ones who have retired from politics this general election.

During the launch of the People's Action Party (PAP) manifesto launch, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shared that 20 PAP MPs are retiring.
