The Workers' Party (WP) has won Sengkang GRC, capturing 52.13 per cent of the popular vote.

It marks a historic moment in Singapore politics, being the second GRC to ever be won by the opposition.

Thanked young voters

WP's Sengkang GRC team, consisting of He Tingru, Jamus Lim, Louis Chua and Raeesah Khan, took turns to give thank-you speeches following the announcement of the final results.

He kicked off the speeches by thanking their People's Action Party (PAP) opponents before thanking those who gave them the support.

"Thank you so much for the trust and the leap of faith you have taken in our team here today. We will work hard to make sure this trust is not misplaced," He said.

He also expressed her appreciation for the young voters who have rallied around the team, and said that they are the future of Singapore.

Khan similarly thanked Singaporeans for standing with her throughout the campaign.

At 26, she will be the youngest Member of Parliament to be elected into Parliament.

Thanked voters in Hokkien

In a callback to his comments in the GE2020 Political Debate on July 1, Lim said that it "warms the cockles of our hearts to be able to work for the people of Singapore, and for all Singaporeans", as he held up a finger heart.

He said that he hoped that their team had "inspired" citizens to believe that an alternative voice in Parliament could be a reality.

"We hope that we've inspired you — all of you — to believe that the dream of an alternative future is only as far away as the courage to seize the opportunities that come your way, only as difficult as the passion you bring to pursue what you believe to be right, and only as difficult as your willingness to put your nose down to the grind and make it happen."

He then thanked all for journeying along with WP, and promised that the team would work for a brighter future in Sengkang.

Lim subsequently ended off his speech with a rousing "Kam xia, Sengkang" (Thank you in Hokkien).
