Local charity organisation Hope In Meals has shared the abject condition of an elderly man in Singapore.

According to their Facebook post on July 23, a volunteer uncovered the beneficiary's situation when she visited him at his flat.

Positive despite circumstances

The man had urinated and defecated around the flat, and even in food containers, as he was unable to stand or walk to the toilet.

The charity added that he was "panting very heavily."

The volunteer then called an ambulance, and notified her peers to assist the man.

Hope In Meals added that the elderly man has been a beneficiary since they started, and he was known for his friendliness and positive attitude despite circumstances.

However he lives alone, and needs constant reminders to take his medication.

He is now under nurses' care at a hospital, with the Hope In Meals saying that they are "very grateful" for the prompt response.

The charity also thanked the volunteers for their hard work:

"Only through daily interactions with our beneficiaries can we quickly identify those who need medical attention. We truly are grateful to our volunteers, who had built up a rapport with Uncle by bringing him meals and kopi everyday, and so could easily see that something was amiss and further help Uncle before the situation worsened."

This enables them to render help in a timely manner, they added.

Not the only case

This is not the only case that the charity has to grapple with.

In other instances, some of the beneficiaries' neighbours had passed away for a few days before anyone noticed.

The charity then appealed for funds, as they are currently running low and fighting hard to keep the initiative sustainable.

Those who want to help can also volunteer with them, or even share their post.
