Singapore’s first woman general and MP-elect in Marymount SMC became the subject of various memes after she made a rousing nomination day speech.

In a Facebook photo post on July 25, Gan embraced the online chatter by saying that her morning run "was not 5BX. 😉"

5BX refers to "5 Basic Exercises", a common form of physical training conducted in military units.

Commended for her sense of humour

Commenters were overwhelmingly receptive to how Gan seems to have embraced the jokes being made about her.

One commenter jokingly cited a military greeting:

Many others joined in with appreciative comments about Gan's sense of humour:

"No one can bully or make fun of you when you laugh at yourself first", said another comment:

To top all of this off, Gan's post has been shared over a thousand times in less than a day.

Bishan Park not within Marymount SMC

While Gan has quickly won praise with just one self-aware sentence in a Facebook post, it's notable that she pulled off this feat without home ground advantage.

Her appeal seems to have spread to the neighbouring constituency of Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, where Bishan Park is located.

Gan's reception there seems to have been a warm one, too, as she was welcomed by GRUB Burger Bistro, where she stopped for breakfast.

Previously acknowledged memes about nomination day speech

Gan had previously acknowledged the memes about her nomination day speech in a video posted on Facebook.

"I had to tell the residents that I'm serious about wanting to serve them", she explained, and expressed hopes that residents would "see the true me" when meeting her face-to-face.

Gan appointed as political officeholder

The goodwill that Gan is accumulating will likely serve her well in her new appointments, as Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Manpower.
