Fire caused by PMD engulfs entire bedroom in Mountbatten HDB flat, 150 residents evacuated

No injuries were reported.

A fire broke out at a Mountbatten HDB flat at about 9:20am on June 30.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), they were alerted to a fire in a sixth floor unit of Block 2 Jalan Batu.

150 safely evacuated

The fire involved the contents of a bedroom and it was subsequently extinguished using a water jet and a compressed air foam backpack.

Some 150 residents from the affected block were evacuated by the police as a precautionary measure.

No injuries were reported.

Fire caused by PMD

In a preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire, it was revealed that the fire was of electrical origin from a Personal Mobility Device (PMD) that was charging at the time of the fire.

Encouraged to dispose of PMD

E-scooters have been banned from public footpaths since Nov. 5, 2019.

Non-certified PMDs will no longer be allowed for use in public with effect from July 1, 2020.

Owners of Non-UL2272-certified PMDs are strongly encouraged to dispose of their devices.
