People's Action Party

Gan Siow Huang:

"Dear residents of Marymount, fellow Singaporeans, I’m Gan Siow Huang, PAP’s candidate for Marymount SMC.

I'm proud to be a Singaporean and I'll tell you why. My father was a taxi driver, and my mother a housewife. Despite not having much to start with, My parents worked hard and raised my three siblings and me as well.

When I was born, my grandmother suggested giving me away to a relative as my parents could not afford more children. But my parents decided to keep me instead. They persevered and worked hard, and raised my siblings and me well and saw us through university education.

When I joined the Singapore Armed Forces, I also had many opportunities. Through my 20-over years with the SAF, I had the opportunity to work with different groups of people and picked up expertise in the areas of operations, maintenance, manpower, long-term planning and policy making to serve the residents of Marymount well.

I believe the experience and values that I gained in the SAF, especially in leading and taking care of people, will enable me to serve the residents of Marymount well.

Marymount used to be part of the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. If elected, my PAP colleagues in the GRC and I intend to have a single town-council to maintain the estates in both the GRC and the SMC. This way, we will be able to maintain high standards in taking care of the estates well in a cost-effective way.

I’m joining politics so that I can give back to the community. I ask for your support and vote so that together, we can make Marymount a place that our residents will be proud to call their home, and proud to be Singaporeans. Just like me."

Progress Singapore Party

Ang Yong Guan:

"Dear fellow Singaporeans and voters of Marymount

Singapore is a safe and peaceful place to live in. But do Singaporeans feel at peace with their lives?

We are living in an expensive and stressful city. We are known as the OCD capital of the world; 1 in 33 Singaporeans suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The stigma of mental illness is still prevalent today; many are afraid to talk about it.

Many of us feel that to survive, we have to work long hours and cannot [allowed] ourselves time to relax. Yes, Kiasuism is a big part of our lives.

In its obsession to grow the economy, this PAP government has neglected to focus on building its people. It refuses to promote a political climate where diversity thrives and people are encouraged to speak their minds freely.

Instead, it has relied on making use of the law such as POFMA to curtail the freedom of its people, to consolidate its power and to create an uneven playing field.

Insisting on holding an election to get a fresh mandate during this Covid-19 pandemic [puts] the health of Singaporeans second. The incumbent thinks that getting a fresh mandate for themselves is justification to get the GE over quickly. It is not! We deserve to have our well-being prioritised.

The recent move to tag Singaporeans electronically, although seemingly effective in the current Covid-19 situation, is causing so much unease.

Do they really empathise with Singaporeans’ concern?

This over-dominant PAP government has contributed to this sad state of affairs.

We want an inclusive government, not an exclusive one. A government that can connect with its people. A government that listens to its people.

The post Covid-19 Singapore requires a rethink. We need bolder and more divergent thinking. It can no longer be a one-size-fits-all or all yes-men approach. This is where alternative parties play a role in nation building. We need 32 opposition MPs to deny PAP its two-third majority.

As a psychiatrist, I would be able to examine policies that have direct psychological impact on our lives. Singaporeans should be happy, and not just wealthy. Give me a chance to make it happen for you in Parliament.

Finally, to the voters of Marymount, I want to make Marymount a model constituency, it is my dream. Let’s make it a reality.

Vote me in. Vote PSP. You deserve better."
