Local Mandopop star Stefanie Sun held an impromptu concert last night (June 9) on Facebook, the 20th anniversary of her first album launch.

Before her concert though, the singer devoted about half an hour to a brief question and answer session with her fans via a Facebook Live video.

Dressed simply in a white t-shirt and jeans, the singer said in Mandarin: "Actually by this time, we should have been face-to-face in a real life concert."

Sharing more about her personal life over Facebook Live

Sun was supposed to kick off her 20th anniversary concert with a Singapore stop in June this year. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic threw a spanner in the works.

"But still, I feel that we are very lucky to be able to use technology to chat with each other," she added.

Thanking fans for their well wishes as well as the radio stations which have been playing her songs to commemorate her anniversary, Sun started off by sharing with her fans what she has been busy with: Drawing, online Mandarin classes, pilates, reading, and watching TV.

Sun has also been busy in the kitchen.

"I've made cookies, cakes, chicken, mushroom chicken — all were quite edible lah," she said. " I think my culinary skills have improved."

Sun also showed her fans some of her art pieces.

"Actually, my first piece was a drawing of a skull, but they can't show it here, so I'll show you something else," she said as she held up a pencil-drawn profile before moving on to more sophisticated pieces created with ink, crayons and watercolour.

"Actually, my secret dream is to become an artist.....I won't open a gallery lah. This is just a hobby," she said before moving on to fans' questions.

Other questions from fans

Sun also picked some questions from the comment section to answer:

Her last show on Netflix

Her last show was "Concussion" starring Will Smith. "It's not bad, but I really like watching quite 'brainless' shows," she said.

On having a third baby

"No, thanks."

On her hair

While Sun admitted that her hair is in disorder, she added that she quite likes it this way.

"I really love my hairdresser, but every time I have to dye my hair, do my hair, it really drives me nuts! This is one of the things in my job that drives me crazy."

On running with a mask

Admittedly a difficult task, but Sun said that she does it out of respect for others. "When you run (*makes heavy panting sounds*), you don't want to spread your droplets to others," said Sun.

On her 20th anniversary concert

"It's not within my control," she said, rather apologetically, adding that she has definitely been preparing, however.

"Actually, every performer has been affected. Aside from singers, every concert also has musicians, dancers, and the whole production team — all of them have been seriously affected."

On her husband

Sun shared that her husband is very sweet.

"He has been silently supporting me by my side all these years. Perhaps some folks might not understand him well but he always supported by dreams and whatever I wanted to do.....I really treasure him."

One thing that made her very happy recently

"Actually preparing to see you guys today made me quite happy," she said.

"People are going through extraordinary times. I felt that the world around me has suddenly halted. I don't go out often and so I feel that I have had more time to find my own tempo. It has been very quiet. However, I also miss my greatest love: singing.

I think it's a very fortunate thing to be able to take this time to find joy in the darkness."

On being a singer

Referring to the song montages that her fans have been creating in commemoration of her 20th anniversary, Sun said that she sees their efforts in capturing the nostalgia of listening to her songs. She teared as she was watching them.

"Actually I don't know why I teared. Emotions are a very complicated affair. However, what is certain to me is that being singer is one of the happiest jobs one can do because you have the company and support of so many people."

Rounding off her Q&A session, Sun then sang snippets of her popular songs over the years — including "Green Light" (绿光), "What I Miss" (我怀念的), and "Windbreaker" (风衣) — before moving into her impromptu concert proper.
