Red Dot United has become the newest political party in Singapore.
Its application to be registered as a political party was approved a mere three weeks after it was submitted.
The lightning quick turnaround approval gives it the chance to compete in this coming general election as the 13th political party to be registered in Singapore, an unusual turn of events highlighted by Today.
Breakaway faction from PSP
Red Dot United is a splinter group from the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).
Former PSP members Ravi Philemon, 52, and Michelle Lee, 43, have branched out on their own with this new party.
Lee left PSP in March. She was the party's vice-chairman.
Philemon resigned from PSP in May.
Red Dot United has 12 members so far.
Two other former PSP members have since joined Red Dot United.
The office holders in the party are so far limited to Philemon, who is the secretary-general, Lee, who is the chairman, and Chia Weng Lee, a 53-year-old business owner, who is the party’s treasurer.
The application for Red Dot United was submitted on May 26.
It was approved on June 15 by the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) Registry of Societies.
This short approval process is way quicker than the average processing time of about two months by the registry.
Philemon previously said he would be writing to the registry to expedite the process.
But it is not known if this allowed the approval to hasten.
Philemon said the party would release an official statement about the approval on Thursday or Friday.
Philemon and Lee first announced on May 29 that they would form a new political party.
The announcement came days after PSP secretary-general Tan Cheng Bock said people with “big egos” had joined PSP out of self-interest, and he would “not feel sorry” if these people left the party.
This is a breaking story. We have contacted Philemon and Lee for additional comment.
