Health authorities in New Zealand said that the last Covid-19 patient has recovered from the virus, leaving no active cases in the country as of Monday, Jun. 8, 2020.

No active cases in New Zealand

Director-General of Health, Ashley Bloomfield, said it was a pleasing development, having no active cases for the first time since Feb. 28, when the country identified its first case of Covid-19, reported ABC News.

Health officials caution that there could be more imported cases in future.

Currently, New Zealand has imposed border restrictions to all except citizens and residents, with some exceptions.

Experts say that the country's isolated location helped the nation of five million wipe out the virus, along with leadership shown by New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who imposed a strict lockdown in the early days of the outbreak.

It has been 17 days since the last new case was reported in New Zealand.

New Zealand is set to declare itself free of Covid-19 on June 15, based on two full cycles of Covid-19 transmission of 28 days passing since the last community transmission case ended self-isolation.

The country had a total of 1,154 confirmed Covid-19 cases, out of which 22 died from the virus.

As of Jun. 8, 2020, more than 400,000 have died from Covid-19 globally.
