The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is appealing for information on a case of suspected pet neglect and abandonment.

A male dog, likely a Maltese, was found outside Pet Lovers Centre at Blk 177 Toa Payoh Central on the morning of May 31.

It had been left in a blue basket lined with newspapers, and was in a "severely neglected state".

From the photos, it appeared that the dog had defecated in the basket. Besides being faeces-stained, its fur also looked unkempt and unhealthy.

Sadly, the Maltese passed away the next day despite receiving veterinary treatment, SPCA revealed.

The organisation is offering a S$1,000 reward for information leading to the prosecution of the person/s responsible.

Anyone with information can call their 24-hour hotline at 6287 5355 (ext. 9), or e-mail [email protected].

Under the Animals and Birds Act, anyone found guilty of cruelty to animals can be imprisoned for up to 18 months, fined up to $15,000, or both.
