The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on many people worldwide.

In Nara city, Japan, the local government appealed to the public for donations to support those in need.

Much to their surprise, an elderly man turned up at the city's government building on June 4 with stacks of cash in response to the call for donations.

The man, who appeared to be in his 70s, simply passed the package of cash to the staff, saying "I'm handing this to you" before leaving.

The staff tried to chase after him but did not manage to catch up.

The man bundled three stacks of 10 million yen separately and attached the cutouts from the donation notice, indicating that he is donating 10 million yen each for three causes -- support the poor, improve the education system and the health system.

The huge sum of 30 million yen (S$380,000) was then packed in 10 plastic bags, according to Mainichi.

The city mayor Gen Nakagawa also released a statement to thank the man for his generosity.
