A 40-day-old baby was infected with the coronavirus and died of Covid-19, The Jakarta Post reported.

This was after he was picked up and cuddled during visits by neighbours, who came to congratulate the family on the new arrival.

The baby tested positive for Covid-19 when he was just 28 days old.

After nearly two weeks of treatment, he died.

He was conveyed to hospital in the Indonesian province of East Java after he was taken ill.

Got it from neighbours

The Indonesia coronavirus task force chief Syaiful Hidayat said that contact tracing pointed towards the baby having contracted the virus from neighbours who visited him after he was born.

Syaiful said that many of the neighbours carried the infant during their visits.

The baby subsequently developed symptoms of the virus that included coughing, a fever and breathing problems.

His parents have tested negative for Covid-19.

It was later found that people with symptoms of the virus and others who tested positive failed to self-isolate in the Tlanakan district where the baby lived.

The baby has been buried under strict coronavirus protocols.

Indonesia has suffered 47,896 cases of Covid-19 with 2,535 related deaths.
