GE 2020: PAP introduces 4 more new candidates, including first female general

One from SAF and three from corporate backgrounds.

The People's Action Party (PAP) announced its sixth batch of candidates in a virtual press conference this morning (June 26).

The four new candidates were introduced by PAP vice-chairman Masagos Zulkifli, who's the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs.

1. Gan Siow Huang

Gan Siow Huang, 46, is the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i).

Previously, she has served more than 20 years in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), where she also became the first woman general.

In the SAF, she started as an air traffic controller and rose through the ranks in command the four airbases: Tengah, Sembawang, Paya Lebar and Changi.

Gan was among the first four women to receive the SAF Merit Scholarship in 1993.

Gan said that coming from the SAF, she continues to have the desire to serve and wish to fight for Singapore's future.

She added that this is "natural" for SAF personnel to want to serve even after leaving SAF.

When asked about her thoughts on the number of SAF generals in the party and what makes her different, Gan asked Singaporeans not to "stereotype military people".

"Don’t look at me as just another general, look at me for who I am," Gan said.

She also added that she takes a lot of pride in being part of the SAF tribe, as the people are professional and dedicated.

2. Rachel Ong Sin Yen

Rachel Ong Sin Yen is the chief executive for local enterprise ROHEI Corporation.

The 47-year-old also started Trybe, a charity with the Institute of Public Character (IPC) status that runs the Singapore Boys Hostel, Community Rehabilitation Centre for first-time drug abusers and Trybe Aftercare.

The charity also provides youth with guidance and offer support for their families and communities.

She also serves as the Vice-Chair for Telok Blangah Citizens' Consultative Committee.

3. Sharael Taha

Sharael Taha, 39, is the Secondment from Rolls Royce to be the Vice President for Strategy and Project Management in Singapore Aero Engine Services Private Limited (SAESL).

Previously, he was based in the UK and was responsible for global projects across the company's engine assembly and test facilities in Britain, Scotland and Singapore.

Sharael was an active volunteer at Bukit Batok East and engaged youths on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)

He also held frequent engagement sessions to share his experience with students from the Institutes of Higher Learning.

4. Alex Yeo Sheng Chye

Alex Yeo Sheng Chye is the director at Niru & Co LLC.

Prior to this, he has served as the Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

He has been an active grassroots volunteer in Potong Pasir since 2014 and in Paya Lebar since January 2017.

He has been instrumental in the many ground-up, community-led initiatives that benefited the residents of Paya Lebar.
