58 businesses and individuals have been fined for breaching safe distancing rules during the first week of Phase 1, between June 2 and June 8.

This was announced after Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) conducted inspections at workplaces, malls (including supermarkets within the malls) and tourism establishments in the past week.

5 businesses fined for not enforcing Safe Management Measures

According to the media release on June 9, five businesses across retail, food and manufacturing have failed to enforce Safe Management Measures sufficiently.

They were each fined S$1,000 for not directing employees to work from home where the job function allows for it, not implementing at least one-metre safe distancing measures and not complying with sector-specific requirements on retail sales.

Besides these five businesses, another 10 businesses were advised to improve their safe management measures.

The agencies also reminded employers that working from home must be the default mode of working for companies resuming operations in Phase 1 and 2.

53 individuals fined in first week

53 individuals were also fined S$300 during this period.

They were either members of the public or employees of retail and F&B outlets.

They were penalised for not wearing masks, breaching the ban on social gatherings and leaving their place of residence for non-essential purposes, the media release stated.

The agencies also urge businesses to implement SafeEntry, ensure there are proper queue markings and crowd control during peak hours and ensure employees wear their face masks at all times except during meals.

Members of the public are also reminded to practise safe distancing and abide by the measures at these public places.

Under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act passed in Parliament on April 7, 2020, first-time offenders will face a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

Subsequent offences may face a fine of up to S$20,000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both.
