Non-M'sians entering M'sia must pay S$684 for 14-day hotel quarantine from June 1 onwards

For Malaysians, half of the cost is waived.

Starting from June 1, Singaporeans entering Malaysia must pay for a mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine.

Full cost is about S$684

Speaking on May 20, Malaysia's Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that non-Malaysians entering the country, including permanent resident pass holders, will have to foot the full cost of hotel accommodation when they are quarantined upon arrival, The Malay Mail reported.

As for Malaysians, they will pay for half of the accommodation, with the government subsidising the other half, the New Straits Times reported.

According to The Star, the full cost of quarantine is RM150 (S$48.87) per day, which means the total cost for all 14 days is RM2,100 (S$684.11).

This is a cost that will be kept constant across all hotels, regardless of their star rating.

Required to sign an agreement letter before entering the country

In addition, both Malaysians and non-Malaysians must sign an agreement letter for payment of the quarantine accommodation cost prior to entering the country, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) further reported.

Such a letter can be obtained at Malaysian embassies and high commissions in other countries.

Ismail Sabri added that the country's Immigration Department has also instructed all airlines to include the signed agreement letter as a condition for entry into the country.

In elaborating on the purpose of such a measure, he stated:

"Many permanent resident pass holders who married a Malaysian, and are required to undergo compulsory quarantine, had refused to pay the cost for hotel accommodation.

Now, we want them to sign the agreement letter before they are allowed to return and enter the country, so that they are clear that they are the ones who will have to bear the cost of the hotel accommodation."
