The death of a young adopted mongrel dog called Loki has sparked much furore in the past two days.

Loki, who would be turning three in July, has allegedly been put down by his owners, despite being healthy during the circuit breaker period.

This was disclosed by a staff member from non-profit welfare group, Exclusively Mongrels Limited, on Facebook.

The Facebook post was asked to be taken down subsequently, as the owners of Loki lodged a complaint against the staff member, Theng Wei Gan, for doxxing.

The incident has also prompted a response from the Member of Parliament for Nee Soon GRC, Louis Ng, who promised to raise the issue of "convenient euthanasia" in Parliament.

Petition for more stringent rules on animal euthanasia

A petition has been created by members of the public to urge the government to implement more stringent regulations on animal euthanasia in Singapore.

The organiser of this petition listed three cases where "young, healthy" dogs have been put down because of their "aggressiveness".

This included a seven-month-old puppy called Tammy, which was put down by its owner in 2013.

The organiser acknowledged that animal welfare and reception to adoption have improved in recent years.

However, there are still such cases where dogs considered "not even extremely sick" were put to death.

The organiser hopes to petition for a change in the protocol on animal euthanasia through discussion with animal welfare groups.

"Dogs are our family, not our property. Let’s make sure these laws and protocols reflect that."

The petition has now garnered close to 4,000 signatures as of the time of writing.
