Two youths were seen illegally fishing at the Marina Bay Sands boardwalk on early Thursday morning, May 7, and the national water agency PUB is investigating the incident.
The duo were seen fishing by a member of the public at around 5am on Vesak Day, in the midst of the Covid-19 circuit breaker period in Singapore.
A video of their antics was captured and put up on Facebook:
The two youths were apparently still there at 7am.They could be seen wearing masks, although it appeared they were not worn properly.
A member of the public told Stomp: "I believe they cycled here."
"I reported the incident via the OneService app too."
PUB response
PUB said it is investigating the incident: "Fishing is illegal at the boardwalk as the waters form part of Marina Reservoir."
"There are prominent signs along the boardwalk to inform the public of this and CCTVs are installed to enhance surveillance."
Offenders can be fined up to S$3,000 if caught fishing at no-fishing areas and/ or using live bait at reservoirs.
All designated fishing areas at its reservoirs are currently closed during this circuit breaker period, PUB also noted.
"To report any illegal fishing activities, or if anyone has information on the two youths, please call 1800-CALL-PUB so that we can take this opportunity to educate them on responsible fishing and the circuit breaker safety measures," PUB also said.
