Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia and former Chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), has been sacked from his party.
According to Malaysiakini, this was in response to Mahathir sitting on the opposition bench during the session of the Dewan Rakyat (Malaysia's lower house of Parliament) on May 18.
The party's decision was communicated to Mahathir via a letter from the party's organising secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya on May 28.
Bersatu's president, Muhyiddin Yassin, is the current Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The party itself is part of the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition with UMNO, among others.
Along with Mahathir, four other Bersatu members were also sacked. They are:
- Mukhriz Mahathir, Mahathir's son, former Bersatu Deputy President and former Chief Minister of Kedah
- Syed Saddiq, Youth Chief of Bersatu and former Youth and Sports Minister
- Maszlee Malik, former Education Minister and Bersatu supreme council member
- Amiruddin Hamzah, Bersatu supreme council member
