An audio clip has emerged in which former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad supposedly saying that he doesn't like Anwar Ibrahim, his former Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition partner, and the Democratic Action Party (DAP), which was also part of the PH.

The clip, which was uploaded to Facebook, including a page titled, "Bersatu sokong (supports) Tun Mahathir", was supposedly recorded during a Bersatu party meeting on Feb. 23.

This was one day before the party left the PH coalition and Mahathir resigned as prime minister.

Did Mahathir and Bersatu plan leave PH?

In the clip, a voice that sounds like Mahathir's could be heard discussing the proposal for the party to leave PH.

The Mahathir-sounding voice could be heard trying to postpone the decision.

The person supposedly said, according to the Malay Mail:

"There is this proposal for us to leave Pakatan Harapan. Another proposal I made was whether we want to think this through or follow others. So, I want to know whether we leave now or give it some time.

Because for me, support from Umno is so fickle that if we give it a little time, they will like me. So, there’s not much difference, not much difference. The only thing is I don’t like DAP, I don’t like Anwar, and the rest are the same."

The voice added that it was only a "matter of time" on whether Bersatu would leave PH or not.

After other voices chanted "Today! Today!", the first voice said, "If you say it’s today, okay, it’s today. Today we leave Pakatan Harapan."

Back on Feb. 24, Bersatu party president Muhyiddin Yassin said that the decision of the party to leave PH was made "the day before", which is the day when this clip was supposedly recorded.

Bersatu committed to new Perikatan Nasional coalition

The clip emerged on the same day as a Bersatu party statement, which said that the party decided to leave PH during this meeting.

The statement said that Bersatu is now fully committed to the goals of the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition, which includes Barisan Nasional and PAS.

However, some notable signatures were missing from this statement, including Mahathir, his son Mukhriz and former Ministers Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman and Maszlee Malik.

Bersatu supreme council member present at meeting disputes account

Another Bersatu Supreme Council member, Tariq Ismail Mustafa, disputes what was heard on the audio clip.

According to the Malay Mail, Tariq said that he was present at that meeting, but does not remember any decision being taken by the party to leave PH at that moment.

Tariq, who is the grandson of a former deputy prime minister, said that the discussion ended with an agreement for Mahathir to make the final decision after he had some time to consider the proposal.

He added, referring to the breakaway Bersatu faction led by Muhyiddin and the breakaway PKR faction led by Azmin Ali:

"If the purpose of this video is to break the relationship between Tun and PH, and to provoke Anwar Ibrahim and the DAP, then it is evident that the ‘Sheraton gang’ has been mistaken."
