Jack Neo, Mark Lee and Henry Thia have known each other since 1988.
And in a 31-year friendship, there's bound to be ups and downs.
In a Facebook livestream on May 9, which lasted about an hour, they reminisced about the shows they worked on together and also had a candid chat about their friendship — including what annoyed them about each other.
Neo hates the smell of cigarette smoke
In the first instance of them airing their grievances, Neo confessed that Lee's smoking habit was a source of frustration for him while they were filming "Comedy Nite", a popular Channel 8 variety show the aired in the 1990s.
Neo said that he's particularly sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke.
"You know what annoyed me most about Mark Lee? Let me tell you. When we were rehearsing for "Gao Xiao Xing Dong", he would smoke inside the room... I was so frustrated! Whenever I approached him about it, he wouldn't bother about me."
Lee retorted, saying that during that time, smoking prohibitions were a lot more lax.
However, once laws became stricter, he said he didn't do it anymore.
Thia was irritated that Lee wouldn't pay him back for cigarettes
While on the topic of smoking, Thia said that he quit smoking because of Lee.
He explained the sequence of events leading to his decision:
"Back then, whenever Lee smoked, I would take one stick or two from him. I never bought a pack on my own. Once, Lee called me asking 'Where are you? We are in rehearsal now.' I told him, 'I'm on my way.' He asked me to stop by the petrol kiosk to buy a pack of cigarettes for him. ONE PACK, listen to this carefully, and he didn't pay me back!"
According to Thia, Lee had asked him to do this on several occasions, up to five or six times.
Thia said, "I was thinking... Eh? This is not worth it. I take one or sticks from him at a time, but buy him an entire pack. So I stopped smoking!"
Lee said that Thia never once rejected his request to help him buy cigarettes.
"Today, his inner thoughts are finally revealed!" Neo said.
Didn't trust Thia as a driver
When it came to his turn, Thia admitted to being "super annoyed" with Neo once.
"I've not even said I dislike you and you're already talking about me," Neo cut in.
Thia insisted on going first, lest he forgot that he wanted to complain.
The incident happened on a Monday, and both of them were in the car, heading towards a rehearsal.
Thia had gone to fetch Neo as the latter's car was being serviced.
However, during the ride, Neo had ripped out the road tax and carpark decals on the car, saying that it blocked Thia's view.
The director felt that Thia was too short to properly see anything while driving, and that he was scared as a passenger.
"You've really hurt his [Thia's] feelings," Lee told Neo.
According to Lee, Thia had grumbled to him upon reaching the rehearsal scene, saying that he was "angered to death" by Neo.
Thia felt that Neo didn't trust him as a driver, and also kept directing Thia to "brake" while on the roads.
After his rant, Thia said that it was all in the past, and that they shouldn't bring it up anymore.
Quarrelled on a cruise
In response, Neo recalled an incident where he was extremely angry and exasperated with Thia.
The two had quarrelled aboard a cruise ship, where Lee, Thia, and Neo were all performing.
Neo said that he couldn't take the "disrespectful and illogical" words from Thia, and both parties had sulkily retreated to their rooms.
When they regrouped, Neo recounted, Thia had apparently said, "I forgive you, I'm feeling okay now."
Lee then chimed in with what he remembered of the incident.
According to Lee, their performance ran into certain issues, so Neo told Lee and Thia off. Neo was loud to Lee, but had raised his voice even more with Thia.
"Maybe he [Thia] felt that it was unfair, due to hormonal imbalance, he even threw a paper cup," Lee joked.
Thia then insisted that it wasn't him who threw the cup, but Neo instead.
Thia had also said then, "How come you don't scold Mark when he does something wrong, but only scold me?"
The next morning, when everyone was having breakfast together, Thia told Neo, "I told my wife about the incident yesterday, and even she said I was in the wrong. So I'll forgive you today."
Lee and Neo burst out laughing on video, while Neo said, "Really buay tahan you [Thia]."
Later on, Lee revealed that Thia had actually said his "lines" wrong; the latter had instead meant to tell Neo:
"I told my wife about the incident yesterday, and even she said I was in the wrong. You'll have to forgive me."
Hilarious.
