Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat unveiled the S$33 billion Fortitude Budget on May 26.

This is the fourth budget for Singapore this year, and includes support for job-seekers during these tough times.

New SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package

In his speech, Heng announced the launch of the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package.

As part of this package, a new SGUnited Skills programme will be rolled out progressively from July 2020.

This programme aims to expand training capacity for about 30,000 job seekers this year.

Heng stated that through this programme, job seekers can upgrade their skills while looking for a job.

Receive S$1,200 training allowance

Heng added that job seekers will also receive a training allowance of S$1,200 per month during the course of their training.

According to Heng, this will help them focus on their training and job search.

Participants of the programme will take industry-relevant and certifiable training courses full-time, at highly subsidised rates.

The course fees can be substantially, if not fully offset by their SkillsFuture Credit.

The courses will be delivered by companies and Continuing Education Training (CET) Centres, including Institutes of Higher Learning.

Job seekers will be given opportunities to apply their training, through attachments or participation in company projects.

They will also be provided with career guidance and job placement support.
