Face masks are not the only type of protective gear that members of the public can choose to wear when heading out in public, according to an update on the Ministry of Health's FAQ page on April 29.

According to the MOH's advisory, people in Singapore who need to head out of their homes during this period can wear any of the following types of masks that offer adequate basic protection:

  • Reusable masks
  • DIY masks
  • Plastic face shields

However, plastic spit guards that only cover the mouth are not allowed.

The ministry also noted that surgical masks should be conserved for those who need them the most, including the healthcare workers, in light of a global shortage of surgical masks.

According to CNA, infectious disease experts advised wearing reusable face masks in addition to the use of plastic face shield to increase the protection against exposure to droplets.

Wearing a face shield is not necessary more comfortable and effective than wearing a face mask, according to the report.

Earlier in April, engineers from the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) have come up with locally produced face shields for frontline workers to use when they are on duty.
