Changi Airport Terminal 2 has closed its doors on May 1, 2020 after 30 years of operations.

It will be closed for 18 months as the airport gets a head start on planned upgrade works, and given that the Covid-19 pandemic is still ongoing.

It was announced earlier in April that Terminal 2 will suspend operations until November 2021 to save on running costs.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) said: "The suspension of operations will allow the T2 expansion works announced earlier to be accelerated. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the project can possibly be finished earlier by up to one year."

This was also in view of the steep decline in passenger traffic and likelihood that air travel demand will not return to pre-Covid-19 levels in the near term, said Changi Airport Group.

Airlines that utilise Terminal 2 will be relocated to the remaining terminals.

The last plane, NQ802, operated by Air Japan, departed for Tokyo on April 30 at about 6.10am.

Photos of T2 shared on Facebook

On May 1, Changi Airport uploaded a series of greyscale photos of Terminal 2 on its Facebook page, including shots of the iconic McDonald's, which has closed in January this year, the baggage belts and the analogue flight information board.

The caption read:

"Thank you for your support. Enjoy this set of photos, as you remember these familiar spaces in T2."
