A man living in a HDB flat in Ang Mo Kio found the police at his doorstep after neighbours thought that he was growing marijuana along the corridor of his flat.

Using LED light to grow lady's fingers

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the man, a 35-year-old teacher, had recently moved from Tampines to a flat around Ang Mo Kio Street 51 earlier in March 2020.

He told the Chinese daily that the police had come knocking on his door after his neighbours mistook his okra plants, commonly known as lady's fingers, for a cannabis plant.

It is also believed that the LED lights, which are often used for growing marijuana as well, contributed to the misunderstanding.

He explained that he used the LED light to improve the growth of plants, which are not exposed to direct sunlight.

If his neighbours had come to ask him directly, he would've explained the difference between okra leaves and marijuana leaves to them, he told the Chinese daily.

He added that the LED lights were not used specifically for growing cannabis, and can easily be purchased online.

The teacher said that he didn't expect the LED lights to cause such a misunderstanding.

Maximum of 20 years' prison for cultivating cannabis

Cannabis is classified as a Class A controlled drug under Singapore's Misuse of Drugs Act.

Anyone convicted of cultivating cannabis plants can be given between three and 20 years' jail, fined between S$5,000 and S$40,000, or both.
