Vivian Balakrishnan tells China that S'pore will look after Chinese migrant workers' well-being

They also exchanged views on how safe international travel can be instituted again in the near future.

Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, in a call on Tuesday, April 28, reassured Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that Singapore will continue to look after the well-being of Chinese migrant workers.

This includes providing them with the necessary medical care and treatment should they be infected with Covid-19, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a press release on Tuesday.

Both ministers also expressed appreciation for "the mutual support and effective collaboration" between Singapore and China amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

In a phone call on April 23, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also assured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Singapore will care for Indian migrant workers in the country, just as it has cared for Singaporeans.

Welcomed discussion on resumption of economic exchanges

In addition, Vivian said Wang welcomed the ongoing discussions between both countries to gradually resume economic activity and exchanges.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintain supply chain connectivity as well, especially for medical supplies and food.

They also exchanged views on how safe international travel can be instituted again in the near future.

Lastly, they reaffirmed the importance of continuing to enhance regional and international cooperation, such as through exchanging information and keeping trade links open among all parties.

Vivian congratulated China on effective response to outbreak

Vivian had previously commended China on the significant progress it has made in bringing its domestic Covid-19 situation under control in a phone call with Wang on March 18, according to MFA.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Vivian had also praised China for sharing its experience with the world in a timely fashion, and for sending medical expert teams and medical supplies to other countries.
