Your McDonald's meals could soon be delivered by a ComfortDelGro cabbie.
Option to provide delivery services
In a joint initiative, the fast food chain announced on Apr. 9 that Comfort taxi drivers would be given the option to provide delivery services.
Taxi drivers who choose to do so will be orientated on the necessary procedures to safely and efficiently deliver meals to customers, according to a press release.
Drivers can then pick up and deliver orders from 62 participating McDonald's outlets.
ComfortDelGro revealed, following further enquiries by Mothership, that this delivery service will last till end-June 2020.
Thus far, around 50 cabbies have signed up.
This new arrangement is meant to help taxi drivers who have been hit hard by the Covid-19 outbreak, especially during the circuit breaker period where members of the public are advised to stay home most of the time.
Previous measures to assist taxi drivers
Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan previously eased point-to-point regulations temporarily, allowing taxi and private hire vehicle drivers to participate in delivery services for groceries and food.
This was also due to the increasingly high demand of such delivery services, leading to a shortage of delivery slots online and decrease in fulfilment rates for online deliveries.
This alternative option would also help cabbies and PHV drivers supplement their income.
Aside from delivery services, SMRT and ComfortDelGro previously offered their taxi drivers with alternative jobs as bus captains and "Transport Ambassadors", the latter of which will provide assistance at MRT stations.
On Apr. 4, ComfortDelGro announced that they would be waiving taxi rental fees for all drivers till the after the circuit breaker period on May 5.
