A Facebook user allegedly posted about having an "illegal gathering" on Facebook on Wednesday, Apr. 8, one day after the beginning of Singapore's 28-day circuit breaker to manage the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act 2020 was passed on Tuesday, Apr. 7, banning all gatherings in the home as well as in public spaces such as HDB void decks and parks with family or friends who do not live together.

Illegal gathering after a "long long long long super long day"

A photo of the Facebook post in question submitted to Mothership includes a photograph of five people around a table of food.

The caption reads:

"After a long long long long super long day... We are having a illegal gathering.. So what? Enjoy the food to the max."

The caption also includes Chinese, which reads, "How rare that these two beautiful ladies [names redacted] did the cooking, what a gain."

Stepping up enforcement: Masagos

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli shared on Facebook on Thursday (Apr. 9) that enforcement will be stepped up, as there are still some people not taking the Covid-19 situation seriously or being uncooperative.

Starting Thursday, he wrote, enforcement officers will immediately record down the personal particulars of anyone found to be breaching the elevated safe distancing measures.

Those found to be breaching those measures will face the following consequences:

  • 1st offence: Stern written warning
  • 2nd offence: $300 fine
  • 3rd offence: Charge in court

He called on people to remind each other to make the right decision:

"I urge everyone to make the right choice. #StayhomeforSG, and STAY 1-METRE APART.

Remind your family members, especially the elderly, to stay at home. They are the most vulnerable, and we need to protect them.

Remind also the young, who are out of school during this period, to meet their friends online, and not gather in person.

Young or old — none of us are immune."
